"...a unique and compelling insight into the winds of change that could have altered the course of the Soviet Union forever. Highly insightful, and utterly plausible-a valuable contribution to all that has been written about the Cold War."
Major General (Retired) Mike Ennis, USMC
Pendulum pits a little known and heretofore classified organization, the United States Military Liaison Mission (USMLM) and its main character, Major Matt Bollard, against the Soviet forces of East Germany, and places this rivalry in the context of a Soviet military conspiracy against its own political apparatus. The catalyst for action by both sides is the fast approaching signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). While elements of the Soviet military seek to counter the political changes occurring within its own government and negate the effects of arms negotiations, equally determined members of the U.S. military seek to demonstrate through its intelligence collection that the Soviets cannot be trusted to enter into any viable arms control treaty.
Randal Jones graduated from West Virginia University with a B.A in Russian and earned an M.A. in Russian Area Studies from Georgetown University. He retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. A Special Forces and Russian Area Officer he served in a myriad of intelligence and operational assignments around the world including Liaison Officer to the Commander of Soviet Forces East Germany, United States Military Liaison Mission and upon which Pendulum is based. He also served in the Defense Intelligence Agency; Treaty Inspector, On Site Inspection Agency; 4th Psychological Operations Group; 5th Special Forces Group; and multiple Infantry assignments. His qualifications include Master Parachutist, High Altitude Low Opening, SCUBA, Special Forces, Ranger, Psychological Operations, and qualified as inspector for multiple international arms control treaties. He retired from Science Applications International Corporation in 2012 where he and his team received its highest honor for leading the 2003 U.S. post-invasion recruitment of the Iraqi Army. Pendulum is his first publication.

With the news dominated by the global war on terror, Islamic violence, and Mideast instability, not to mention Syrian chemical weapons, it's hard for people today, especially the young, to relate to the significant events of the Cold War, especially since the most important actions were little publicized if not completely hidden behind a wall of secrecy. Jones novel brings some of the most harrowing events of that period to life in a vivid and compelling story that is so close to the historical facts that it makes me wonder how he was able to get clearance to publish it. As one who lived and worked in this era and participated in the events and activities illustrated in his book, I assure the prospective reader it rings true even in the most minute of details. Jones personal experience gives him a credibility and authority that makes the story all the more riveting.Military experts don't usually make good novelists, but Jones skillful weaving of a highly plausible plot involving totally believable true to life characters with the human strengths and weaknesses with which everyone can identify shows him to be the exception to that rule. The inclusion of detailed background information, a character list and glossary of terms, as well as references from the era make the book much more enjoyable. I found Pendulum to be a fascinating read and highly recommend it!

Enjoy!
The plot was very believable; a throwback to the period of time when rapid changes were occurring in the Soviet Union through the leadership of Gorbachev. You could imagine that the backstage events portrayed in the book could have been going on. Highly recommended.
PENDULUM
As an avid reader of Clancy, DeSilva, Baldachi and other action writers, I am highly impressed with Randy Jones' ability to spin a military tale around real world events. He not only writes well but has incorporated his own life experiences into a very absorbing novel. This is a must read for historical fiction buffs. It gives the reader historical insights into Cold War activities in East Germany during a critical period in history.

The world changed in 1989. What seemed to be a permanent struggle between the communists and the west suddenly became a thing of the past, the old normal became little more than a bad memory. For those who didn't live through it, this book provides insight into the front line maneuvers, both on the conventional European front and in the insurgent struggle in Afghanistan. More insights like this might help us understand and avoid the mistakes history has yet to throw at us.
Having served in the military and a receiver of USMLM intelligence with insights, this book was most interesting.
Randy Hones has done it -- captured what service was like in the United States Military Liaison Mission, an elite military unit that operated behind the Iron Curtain. Others have tried, but the results have not been up to this standard. While ostensibly a work of fiction, it is a realistic portrayal of some of the service performed during the years of the Cold War by a number of talented and dedicated DOD personnel conducting politically sensitive duties in the extremely hostile counterintelligence environment of East Germany. And Randy Jones has done it well, weaving his own experiences with realistic fiction into a high-stakes thriller a reader will find difficult to put down. I look forward to his next book!
The story line was very interesting and about a subject with which I am very familiar. The author's use of real world events and experiences to backstop a plausible what if Cold War account is well done. However, the printing format of wide spacing between paragraphs is very distracting. Additionally, the text at times is somewhat stilted in that in an effort to explain something to the reader the conversation between characters is not natural. Overall enjoyed it very much.
